According to Family Realty in Louisville, Kentucky, Butchertown was established in 1796 by Irish and German immigrants, and is one of Louisville's most historic neighborhoods. The area originally flourished with residents working in the butchering industry, which is how the neighborhood earned its name. Although Butchertown was once a thriving industrial and residential hub, the great flood of 1937 devastated many homes and buildings. The construction of the flood wall and interstate further led to the demolition of parts of the area. In the 1960s, residents banded together to preserve the neighborhood's history, drawing inspiration from Old Louisville.
Today, Butchertown is a vibrant and unique neighborhood, blending a mix of architectural styles, including Victorian brick-a-brac, shotguns, and new construction. It’s also a diverse, cultural, and artistic district, contributing significantly to Downtown Louisville. Many buildings feature large murals that celebrate the neighborhood's heritage. Residents enjoy the convenience of nearby shopping, restaurants, galleries, and bars, while being close to the interstate and other popular Louisville neighborhoods.
