A Family-First Formula for Success in Louisville Real Estate

For Scott Boehnlein ’95, family comes first. Active in the real estate industry since his graduation from the University of Kentucky in 1999, Scott initially worked in the Florida Keys. However, upon meeting his future wife, Elizabeth, he moved back to Louisville to establish roots and raise a family, and he has enjoyed great success as the founder, principal broker, and realtor of Family Realty. The company has come a long way since its inception 21 years ago. From its origins operating out of a room in his house, Scott has built Family Realty into one of the top real estate firms in the Louisville area. Family Realty has over 35 active agents in offices in the Highlands, St. Matthews, and New Albany, Indiana.

Scott is quick to insist that he owes much of his success to his family. “The success of Family Realty is builton the values of hard work and dedication instilled in me by my parents, Diane and Dutch ’67. I’ve also been fortunate to have my brother Christopher ’98 as a business partner for over 16 years and my brother Greg ’92 as a mentor from his successful career in staffing and recruiting. These family examples have helped me build a business where we always put faith and family first.” 

The values Scott learned in the Boehnlein household were reinforced by his experience as a member of the St. X family, an experience that began even before he set foot on campus. His dad, who has devoted countless hours to furthering the school’s mission, is a longtime supporter of the school and a frequent presence on campus. Scott credits St. X with providing him a faith-filled academic environment that was both challenging and nurturing at the same time. In particular, he remembers with gratitude his teacher, Mary (Keene) Jefferson, “who always believed in me and provided great direction,” as well as his basketball coach, JoeBergamini ‘73.

Like his father, Scott is a generous contributor to his alma mater. A member of the Tiger basketball team that made it to the Sweet 16 in 1995, Scott is a proud supporter of his former teammate, close friend, and St.X basketball coach Kevin Klein ’95. He—along with Gunnar Graven ’91 and his company Steepleton—has for years supported St. X basketball camps by donating T-shirts, basketballs, and funds for financial assistance. According to Scott, who also played football and competed on the track team at St. X, “the lessons I learned from athletics continue to drive my commitment to outwork the competition.”

That hard-working spirit and competitive attitude continue to serve him well. However, Family Realty is driven by more than a desire to beat the competition and to achieve a healthy bottom line. The business is not “all about the commission.” Scott, Christopher, and Dutch endeavor to live up to the company name with their clients, treating them like family. “We aren’t just realtors. We are actually a resource for people,for families, whether they need a roofer, or an electrician, or they are relocating from out of town.” Family Realty works hard to maintain and further develop relationships with clients even after the purchase is made. As a result, Family Realty consistently ranks among the top-grossing real estate companies in the city and is building a strong legacy. For Scott and Elizabeth, their sons Scott and George (soon-to-be members of the St. X Class of 2030), and all the Boehnlein family, the future is bright because family comes first.
